The hardness of a conventional alumina coating is approximately 27.5 (GPa). The hardness of the Duratomic diamond coating is about 30.5 (GPa), which is almost 11% higher. The increase in hardness translates directly into an increase in wear resistance, thus increasing tool life. In a typical application, the coating operates at a lower temperature, dropping a full 60 ° C or more than 9%, enough to significantly reduce the tendency of the blade to produce crater wear.

Compared to conventionally produced Al ₂ O ₃ , Duratomic diamond coatings exhibit reduced crater wear, reduced plastic deformation of the cutting edge and extended tool life. When compared to titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coatings or conventional Al ₂ O ₃ coatings prepared by MTCVD, the grades developed by Duratomic's technology have consistently demonstrated improved flank wear resistance and toughness.

The optimized Duratomic diamond cladding structure consists of two functional parts. The inner TiCN base layer is responsible for providing excellent adhesion and basic cutting edge strength, while the top layer of Al ₂ O ₃ acts as an effective thermal barrier allowing for higher cutting speeds.
